The best leaders resist the urge to act immediately. Instead, they regularly step back and ask the uncomfortable question: “Why are we doing it this way?”
Just because a method has worked before doesn’t mean it deserves to continue. Effective leadership requires constantly exploring new ideas and challenging existing strategies—even successful ones.
Great leaders make this a practice by surrounding themselves with diverse teams and creating space for divergent opinions. They pause to see the big picture, actively seek out fresh thinking from others, and aren’t afraid to experiment with new approaches.
This deliberate questioning and openness to change ultimately leads to smarter decisions. The key is giving yourself permission to pause, question, and potentially abandon what’s familiar in favor of what’s better.
Sometimes the most courageous leadership move is simply asking “Why?” when everyone else assumes the current way is the only way.
