Today is tennis legend Martina Navratilova’s birthday, and there’s a story about her that changed how I think about limits.
When she was 43, someone asked how she stayed so fit, focused, and sharp on the court. Her answer was simple but powerful: “The ball doesn’t know how old I am.”
That stuck with me because it shows something important: we need to stop holding ourselves back. Every part of life, whether it’s work, relationships, or growing as a person, is really played in one small place: the six inches between our ears.
Here’s what I’ve learned: we don’t really live in our houses, apartments, or offices. We live in our minds, and that space has no limits. Life feels good when things are neat and clear in there.
But when our minds are messy, everything suffers. Imagine a home where hate sits on the table, regrets pile up in the corners, expectations boil over in the kitchen, secrets are hidden under the rug, and worries are scattered everywhere. You wouldn’t want to live in a house like that.
The secret to doing well in any part of life comes down to one thing: watching what you say to yourself, and how much of it you let in.
I love this simple formula: Performance = Potential − Inner Noise.
The ball doesn’t know your age, where you come from, your past mistakes, or your fears. Neither does your next big chance. Most of the time, the only thing between you and your full potential is the voice inside your own head.
So, what are you telling yourself today?
