Gratitude in the Hard Seasons

I used to think gratitude was something you felt when life was going well. A good day, a kind word, a small win. It never occurred to me that I could be grateful in the middle of something painful.

But when I look back honestly, some of my deepest gratitude was born in my hardest seasons.

When my contract wasn’t renewed, I felt shaken and unsure of myself. I wouldn’t have called that moment a gift. Yet in the weeks that followed, I learned to reach out to people, to rethink what I wanted, and to trust that I could find my footing again. I’m not grateful for the uncertainty itself, but I am grateful for who I became while moving through it.

There are people who hurt me, too. For a long time, I only carried the wound. Now I’m beginning to see that those experiences taught me where my limits are and what I deserve. I don’t have to excuse what they did to be thankful for what I learned.

On the days when life has felt heavy, there was always something that kept me going. Someone I loved, something I hoped for, a small reason to get up in the morning. I don’t think I ever stopped to thank myself, or life, for holding onto that.

I’m learning that gratitude doesn’t mean pretending the pain wasn’t real. It means letting the pain and the good sit side by side. I can grieve what I lost and still notice what remains. I can admit that something was hard and still honor what it gave me.

Maybe this is what inner strength really is. Not the absence of struggle, but the quiet practice of finding meaning within it. And the more I practice, the more I notice that I’m steadier than I once was, less easily shaken, more at peace with the story of my life.
