"Excellence is the result of caring more than others think is wise, risking more than others think is safe, dreaming more than others think is practical & expecting more than others think is possible."

Gratitude Looks Back, Faith Looks Forward

-Karthik Gurumurthy

Gratitude is the thanks we offer after — after the prayer is answered, after the storm passes, after the blessing arrives in full view. It’s a natural response to grace already received, a heart that recognizes good fortune and pauses to give credit where it’s due. Gratitude looks backward at what has already unfolded and says, thank You for this.

Faith, on the other hand, is far bolder. It is thanking God before anything has happened — before the outcome is known, before the prayer is answered, before there’s any visible proof that things will work out. Faith doesn’t wait for evidence; it trusts the goodness of what’s coming, even in uncertainty. It says, I don’t yet see the answer, but I trust You enough to thank You in advance.

If gratitude is the response of a thankful heart, faith is the posture of a trusting one. Gratitude says, “Thank You for what You’ve done.” Faith says, “Thank You for what You’re going to do.” One looks at the evidence already in hand; the other looks beyond the unknown and chooses to believe anyway.

Together, they remind us that a life of true devotion holds both — the humility to be grateful for blessings received, and the courage to trust, in advance, for blessings still on their way.
