"Excellence is the result of caring more than others think is wise, risking more than others think is safe, dreaming more than others think is practical & expecting more than others think is possible."

What You Focus On Grows

-Karthik Gurumurthy

Your brain is not as fixed as it may seem. The most important thing to understand is that it’s adaptive. It changes based on what you focus on, again and again.

After more than 2,000 hours of meditation, one thing becomes clear: our thoughts loop. Negative thoughts tend to bring more negative thoughts. That part feels almost automatic. But here’s the good news: the same is true in the opposite direction too. Positive thoughts, repeated often, bring more positive thoughts.

This isn’t just a nice idea. It’s one of neuroscience’s biggest discoveries in the last fifty years. Even as adults, our brains are not fixed. They keep changing based on where we focus our attention. When you focus on the good in your life, your brain doesn’t just feel better in the moment. It actually forms new neural pathways, training itself to notice even more good over time.

This is called neuroplasticity. It simply means the brain gets stronger at whatever it repeats. Focus on negative thoughts, and you strengthen negative pathways. Focus on positive thoughts, and you build new, positive pathways instead. This ability to change doesn’t go away with age. No matter how old you are, your brain still has this power.

So how do you use this today? Try these three steps:

1. Notice one negative thought. Don’t judge yourself for having it. Just notice it with curiosity, then let it go.

2. Focus on one positive thing. It could be something you’re learning or something you’re grateful for. Don’t just think about it. Really let yourself feel it.

3. Repeat this throughout the day. See how many times you can do this practice.

The main idea is simple. Your brain isn’t fixed. It’s trainable. And like anything trainable, it gets stronger with practice. Start training it today.
