"Excellence is the result of caring more than others think is wise, risking more than others think is safe, dreaming more than others think is practical & expecting more than others think is possible."

A Rare Kind of Beautiful

-Karthik Gurumurthy

Someone once asked me what I admire most in a person. My answer was simple: the ability to leave people better than they found them.

It sounds small, but it’s actually rare. Here’s what that looks like in real life.

To have conversations that heal instead of hurt. Think of a friend who, instead of saying “You should have known better,” says “That sounds really hard, what happened?” One response shuts you down. The other opens a door. Healing conversations don’t avoid hard truths, they just deliver them with care instead of judgment.

To make people feel safe instead of judged. Imagine telling someone you made a mistake at work, and instead of a raised eyebrow or a sigh, they simply say, “Okay, let’s figure out how to fix it.” That small reaction tells you it’s safe to be honest with them, even when things go wrong. People remember who made them feel safe enough to be real.

To be the reason someone walks away smiling instead of questioning their worth. Picture two people leaving the same conversation. One leaves replaying every word, wondering if they said too much or not enough. The other leaves lighter, like they mattered. The difference isn’t what was said, it’s how it was said, and whether the other person left feeling smaller or more whole.

That’s the kind of person worth admiring. Not the loudest, not the most accomplished, but the one who quietly makes everyone around them feel a little more okay.

That’s a rare kind of beautiful.
